Despite having one of the largest coal reserves in the world, India is the second-largest importer of coal due to earlier flawed policies. But, with this bold move by the government of recent auction process for 41 coal blocks for commercial mining by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to open India’s coal sector for private players. It is a move expected to garner Rs 50,000 crore of capital investment in the country over the next five to seven years and will jack up India’s total coal output to 1 billion tonnes. It will also lead to employment generation for more than 2.8 lakh people, as per the government. The government’s decision to open the coal sector for private sector participation in commercial coal mining and gasification corrects a historical anomaly, believes Vatsal.
